Basic Information

For Students Only

Contents

All students will be expected to read about 1 chapter per week from the following textbook:

  • Rogers, Y., Sharp, H., & Preece, J. (2011). Interaction design: Beyond human-computer interaction (3rd edition). Chichester, UK: Wiley.
[Interaction Design Book]

There is a lot of information about the book, including supplementary electronic material, on the website associated with the textbook.

In particular, via the menu labeled “Resources”, you can find an introduction to each of the 15 chapters.

The core chapters for the course are Chapters 9 through 15, which deal with the various phases in the design and evaluation of an interactive system. Most of the material from the earlier chapters will also be covered at various times during the course.

How to Get It

Note added on Thursday, April 19th, 2012: A student in the course has just kindly informed us that a promotion code is available that will give you a 20% discount on either the ebook or the hard copy if you order them via the UK site (see below). You can find the promotion code and further details on the page with other information for students.

The paperback version of the book can be ordered (for around 60 euros) from various on-line bookstores such as amazon.de or directly from the publisher. Please be sure to get the third edition; earlier editions are very different and would be of no use for this course.

A considerably less expensive ebook version can be purchased from the publisher’s UK website. This electronic version can be downloaded to your own computer (running Windows or Mac OS), accessed via a normal web browser (also under Linux), or accessed via iOS or Android devices.

There will also be copies of the book that can be read in the Computer Science and Mathematics library (Building E2 3), but acquiring your own copy will make your work during the entire semester easier and more effective. The book will also serve as a useful reference work for years after the course.
