Computation of the Grades

Note Added After the Makeup Exam

The makeup exam was graded in the same way as the original final exam. For students who took the makeup exam, the higher of the grade for the original final exam and the makeup exam was used for the computation of the overall grade (as can be seen in the spreadsheet).

The other information given in this section remains unchanged.

Quizzes

The results for the individual quizzes will be found in the usual spreadsheet.

Because Quiz 1 (with a fill-in-the-blanks format) was (plausibly) found by some to be artificially difficult, the plan of counting the 10 best quiz results was adjusted a bit: The 9 best of all 13 results were counted, and their sum was multiplied by 10/9 to yield a maximum of 30 points. This computation can be seen in the rightmost column of the spreadsheet mentioned above.

Practical Part

For students who switched groups, the grade for each assignment was that of the group that they belonged to while working on that assignment.

The total is just the sum of the 3 results for the 3 assignments.

The maximum numbers of points were 12, 12, and 16, respectively, for the three assignments.

Weighting of Quizzes and Practical Part

The maximum numbers of points for the quizzes and the practical part were 30 and 40, respectively.

As had been announced, in those cases where it yielded a better result, this relative weighting was reversed: The number of points for the quizzes was multipled by 4/3 and that for the the practical part by 3/4, so that the maximum total remained 70. (It turned out that in almost all cases the original weighting yielded a higher number and was used for the computation.)

Final Exam

Each of the 3 questions was graded on a scale of 0 to 10. The result for the exam is simply the sum of these 3 grades.

Mapping Onto the German Grade Scale

The total number of points between 0 and 100 was mapped onto the German grade scale according to the following thresholds, which are consistent with general conventions:

  • 95+: 1.0
  • 90+: 1.3
  • 85+: 1.7
  • 80+: 2.0
  • 75+: 2.3
  • 70+: 2.7
  • 65+: 3.0
  • 60+: 3.3
  • 55+: 3.7
  • 50+: 4.0
  • Lower: 5.0

Note that the grade of 5.0 is considered to be a failing grade.
